Description

DIETFOLLOW reports whether the diabetic (or, in 1976, pre-diabetic) person who has ever been given a diet or instructions on what to eat for his or her condition, has recently tried to follow the diet or instructions. In 1976, the person was asked if he or she NOW follows the instructions. In 1989, the person was asked if he or she has tried to follow the instructions in the past 12 months. Comparability

Changes in question wording and universe somewhat restrict comparability between samples.

In 1976, all persons with diabetes or a pre-diabetic condition were asked if they "have... EVER been given a WRITTEN diet" for their condition. Those who answered affirmatively were asked if they NOW follow the instructions.

In 1989, only adults with confirmed diabetes (not pre-diabetes) were asked if "a doctor or other health professional [has] ever given you a diet or instructions on what foods you should eat as a diabetic." The question did not specify whether the instruction was written. Those who answered affirmatively were asked if they have tried to follow the instructions in the past 12 months.
