Description

For female persons who are pregnant or gave live birth in the past five years and currently smoke (or, in 1990, current and former smokers), CIGSDAYPS reports the average number of cigarettes smoked per day. Former smokers in 1990 provided the number they typically smoked when they last smoked regularly. See Comparability and Universe tabs for changes in universe between samples. Comparability

In 1985 and 1991, this question was asked only of current smokers. In 1990, this question was asked of current smokers and persons who ever smoked regularly, who reported the average number of cigarettes smoked per day when last smoked regularly. The term "smoked regularly" was respondent defined. Data users are strongly cautioned against comparing responses directly between 1990 and other samples.

In addition, in 1985 and 1990 the question was asked of female persons ages 18 to 44 who are pregnant or gave live birth in the past five years. In 1991, the question was asked of female persons ages 18 to 49 who gave live birth in the past five years.

Universe

  • 1985: Female persons age 18-44 who are pregnant or gave live birth in the past 5 years and smoke cigarettes now.
  • 1990: Female persons ages 18-44 who are pregnant or gave live birth in the past 5 years, who ever smoked 100 cigarettes, who smoke cigarettes now, or who do not smoke now but have ever smoked regularly.
  • 1991: Female persons ages 18-49 who gave live birth in the past 5 years, currently smoke at least 'some days,' and smoked at least one day in the past 30 days.
