Description
For sample adults ages 18 and older who have ever had a diagnosis for a speech problem that lasted a week or longer, VSLSPOTHER reports whether the respondent's speech problem was caused by something other than the issues defined by the survey question. Response categories include hearing loss or deafness, developmental speech sound disorder, cerebral palsy, cleft lip/palate or cranial-facial anomaly, head/neck injury, stuttering, cancer anywhere in the head/neck/throat, neurological cause or dysarthria, and prescription medication or drugs.
VSLSPOTHER is part of the Adult Voice, Speech and Language Supplement. For related variables and more information, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus, or see VSLDIAG, which reports on diagnosis, VSLVDAYS, which reports on the problem duration and extent, and VSLVSLPYR, which reports on treatment.
