Description

For sample persons ages 18-44 in 1991 and sample person ages 12-21 in 1992, MJAG1ST2 reports at what age the person first tried marijuana.
In 1991, this variable is part of a series of questions on drug and alcohol use. Sample persons filled this survey supplement out themselves because of the potentially personal nature of the questions included in the supplement. The interviewer was available to provide assistance if requested. The supplement includes detailed questions about cocaine (COKABUSEYR), marijuana (MJABUSEYR), and general questions about use of hallucinogens, inhalants, heroin, painkillers, sedatives, stimulants, and tranquilizers.

In 1992, this question is asked as part of the Youth Risk Behavior supplement. The supplement includes questions about injury risks, physical fights, weapons use, cigarette smoking, chewing tobacco, alcohol and illegal drug use, AIDS/HIV education, diet and nutrition, physical activities, staying away from home, and sexual behaviors.

Comparability

The ages of the sample persons for this variable change between survey years. Also, the definitions of marijuana and the wording of the question change slightly between years. In 1991 marijuana is specified as the dried flowers or leaves of the hemp plant, as well as hashish. In 1992, the question instead asks about the use of marijuana, grass, or pot.
