Description

For sample adults, OTHVEGSIZ reports the respondent's average portion size (small, medium, or large) when eating other vegetables. Other vegetables include any vegetables not asked about in previous survey questions (previous survey questions asked about carrots or mixed vegetables containing carrots, salad, tomatoes, broccoli, spinach, mustard greens or turnip greens or collards, and coleslaw or cabbage or sauerkraut). The survey question for OTHVEGNO specifically suggests string beans, peas, and corn. A medium portion was defined as ½ of a cup. Researchers may wish to use OTHVEGSIZ in conjunction with OTHVEGNO, which reports the frequency with which the respondent ate other vegetables, and OTHVEGTP, which reports the corresponding time units.

OTHVEGSIZ is part of a series of variables initiated in 1987 related to food, food knowledge, and cancer. For related variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.

Comparability

Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IHIS weights.

Universe

  • 1992: Half of sample persons age 18+ in quarters 1 and 2 and 2 weeks of quarter 3 (excluded from CACT supplement) who ate other vegetables during the past year.
