Codes and Frequencies
Description
For sample persons age 18 and over who worked in indoor spaces during the past two weeks, SMOKWORK2WK reports whether anyone smoked in the person's immediate work area during the past two weeks. Please see Comparability and Universe tabs for information on changes in workspace definition between samples.
Please use drop down menus for related variables.
Comparability
The universe changed between samples because the response options for work areas were altered. In 1991, persons were only asked about smoking in their immediate work area if they reported working in a private or shared enclosed office with door, cubicle with partitions, or an open office area. In 1992 persons were asked about smoking in their immediate work area if they reported working in a private or shared enclosed office with door, cubicle, open area, classroom, or a non-office hospital area; persons who reported some other setting or did not know which setting described their workplace were also asked the question in 1992. Please see the Universe tab for complete universe information.
In addition, the 1992 question was asked only in quarters 1 and 2, and in 2 weeks of quarter 3. Changes in sampling frequency may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
