Description
For sample persons age 12 to 21 years, this variable indicates the number of days the respondent smoked cigarettes in the past 30 days, intervalled into 7 categories.
A cigarette was respondent-defined, but did not include marijuana or cigars.
This variable was part of a Youth Behavior Survey (YBS) conducted several months after the NHIS. The Survey described that the YBS was conducted to gather information on the status of both good and bad health behaviors in order to develop programs to improve the health of young people. For a list of tobacco related variables from the 1992 YBS, see SMOKEPUFFEV.
All respondents were also asked about the number of cigarettes smoked per day, CIGSDAYMOY.
