The term "middle ear infection" was respondent defined, as a definition was not provided to the respondent and not given in the Field Representative's Manual. The inquiry did not specify that the ear infections had to be diagnosed by a doctor or other health care professional.

A similar variable, EARINFYR, whether the child had three or more ear infections during the past twelve months, is available for 1997 forward.
