Description
For persons, RESPOND reports if the person responded for self, whether entirely or partly; if not, reports who responded for him or her.
Comparability
From 1963 to 1981, the proxy respondent was identified by his or her relationship to the person (e.g. mother, father, other, etc.). Beginning in 1982, the relationship of the proxy respondent to the person was not recorded. This question was only recorded for persons ages 17 and older from 1982 to 1990. For years before 1982 and after 1990, the question was recorded for all persons. Apart from changes in the universe, this variable is mostly comparable over time. Changes in the response categories may also affect comparability.
Universe
- 1963-1981: All persons.
- 1982-1990: Persons age 17+.
- 1991-1996: All persons.
