Description
For sample adults ages 18 and older (2012) and all sample persons 3 or older (starting in 2022), VSLSWYR reports if the person had problems or difficulty swallowing in the past year, such as difficulty eating solid food, taking pills, or drinking beverages.
VSLSWYR is part of the Adult Voice, Speech and Language Supplement. For related variables and more information, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus, or see VSLDIAG, which reports on diagnosis, VSLVDAYS, which reports on the problem duration and extent, and VSLVSLPYR, which reports on treatment.
Starting in 2022, the sample child version of this variable, CVSWALDIF, was combined with the sample adult version of this variable, VSLSWYR.
Also starting in 2022, this variable is now a part of the Voice, Swallowing, Speech, and Language Communication Disorders section of sponsored content in the NHIS survey. Please see VSLDIAG for more information on this section.
For more voice, swallowing, speech, and language communication disorder variables, please see VSLDIAG.
