Description
For sample female adults aged 18 and older, OVECT reports whether the respondent has had both ovaries removed.
OVECT was first introduced in 1999.
Comparability
Changes in the universe and question wording may affect comparability over time. In 1999, this question was asked of sample female adults ages 18-49 who are not pregnant AND sample female adults ages 50 and older who have not had a menstrual period in the past 3 or 12 months or who have never had a menstrual period. Beginning in 2010, this question was asked of all sample female adults ages 18 and older who have had both ovaries removed. (See Universe Tab for more details.)
In 1999, respondents were asked if they had had both ovaries removed during any surgical procedures. Beginning in 2010, respondents were asked if they had ever had both ovaries removed, either as part of a hysterectomy or as one or more separate surgeries. (See Survey Text tab for more details.) As a result of these changes, researchers should use caution when making comparisons across years.
Universe
- 1999: Female sample adults who have not had a menstrual period in the past 3 or 12 months or who have never had a menstrual period or who had an unknown response for whether they had a period in the past 3 or 12 months AND who are age 18 to 49 and not pregnant (or whose pregnancy status is unknown) OR who are age 50+.
