Codes and Frequencies
Description
For persons who needed medical care or surgery but did not get it in the past 12 months, NOTCAREMAIN reports the main reason that the person did not get care the last time she/he needed it. The response categories vary over time and include the following: could not afford it, no insurance, doctor didn't accept Medicaid/insurance plan, not serious enough, waited too long in clinic/office, had difficulty getting an appointment, didn't like, trust, or believe in doctors, no doctor available, didn't know where to go, no way to get there, hours not convenient, spoke a different language, health of another family member interfered, insurance didn't cover, clinic or office not accessible, or other reason.
NOTCAREMAIN is a variable dealing with access to care. For related variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.
Comparability
The universe and the response categories changed. Please refer to the Universe Tab and the Survey Text Tab for detailed information.
Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IHIS weights.
