Codes and Frequencies
Description
For sample adults who consumed skim milk, 1% milk, or buttermilk in the past year, MILKSKISIZ reports the portion size consumed each time the respondent drank skim milk, 1% milk, or buttermilk or drinks made with any of these types of milk. Respondents were instructed not to include milk on cereal. A medium portion was defined as 8 ounces. In 1987 and 1992 sample persons were asked about the frequency and portion sizes of different types of milk they consumed in the past year. To improve comparability, the frequency responses were recoded into a single variable that reports how many times the respondent consumed any type of milk, per year (MILKYR). For the type of milk most consumed, see MILKTYPE. MILKSKISIZ corresponds only to the portion size of skim milk, 1% milk, or buttermilk consumed, not other types of milk.
MILKSKISIZ is part of a series of variables initiated in 1987 related to food, food knowledge, and cancer. For related variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.
