Description

For sample adults who are of Hispanic origin, and were given the Spanish questionnaire and speak some English, or who were given the English questionnaire and speak some Spanish, LANGPREF reports the respondent's language preference. Response options included Spanish only, mostly Spanish, mostly English, English only, or Spanish and English about equally.

Comparability

Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.

Universe

  • 1987: Sample persons age 18+ who are of Hispanic origin and received the Spanish questionnaire and speak some English, or who received the English questionnaire and speak some Spanish.
  • 1992: Sample persons age 18+ in quarters 1 and 2 and in 2 weeks of quarter 3 who are of Hispanic origin and were given the English supplement questionnaire and also speak Spanish OR were given the Spanish supplement and also speak English OR were given the Spanish supplement and whether they speak English was not ascertained.
