For persons who needed help getting around or stayed in bed due to a disability or health problem, LAHELPGOFT reports how often the person received the needed help.

Please note: IPUMS NHIS response code 5 (Never) was coded in original NHIS statistical files as "Unknown." However, this coding is inconsistent with the 1977 Final Tape Records that indicate a value of Never. In addition, IHIS response code 9 was unlabeled in the original NHIS statistical files. The 1977 Final Tape Records indicate that this value should be associated with a response value of Unknown. Because 90% of the respondents with that code also provided unknown responses in an adjacent variable, it is our determination that those persons should be correctly labeled as Unknown. However, the actual disposition of these respondents is not known with certainty.
