Description
HOMPRACYR indicates whether the respondent had seen a practitioner for homeopathic treatment during the past 12 months. In 2002, this information was collected from sample adults who had ever seen a practitioner for homeopathic treatment (HOMPRAC). In 2007, such information was collected from sample adults who had used homeopathic treatment during the past 12 months (HOMYR) and had ever seen a practitioner for homeopathic treatment.
In both 2002 and 2007, those who had ever seen a practitioner for homeopathic treatment (i.e., a "Yes" response in HOMPRAC), were asked if they had seen such a practitioner in the past year (HOMPRACYR). In 2007 only, those with an affirmative response to HOMPRACYR were asked these follow-up questions:
- Number of times saw practitioner for homeopathic treatment (HOMPRACNO)
- Amount paid per visit to homeopathic practitioner (dollars) (HOMPRACPAY)
In general, however, the use of homeopathic treatments does not require seeing a practitioner. Many other forms of complementary and alternative medicine inquired about in the NHIS do require a practitioner (e.g., acupuncture, hypnosis, massage). Variables similar to HOMPRACYR, which indicate whether the respondent had seen a practitioner or had taken a class for a modality of alternative medicine during the past 12 months (although seeing a practitioner was not essential for such treatment), include:
- Special diets (DITPRACYR)
- Relaxation technique (RELCLASS)
- Herbal supplements (HERPRACYR)
- High dose or megavitamin therapy (VITPRACYR)
- Yoga, Tai chi, or Qi gong (YTQCLASS)
For more information on the full range of variables related to homeopathic treatment, including definitions, see HOMYR.
