Description
For sample persons ages 12-21, HOMLESPERSYR reports whether the respondent spent at least one night at the home of someone she/he didn't know because the respondent needed a place to stay during the past 12 months. Respondents were asked if they had stayed out overnight without permission in the past 12 months, and about places where they may have spent the night in the past 12 months. Places asked about include: a vehicle; a public place like a bus station, restaurant, or office building; an abandoned building; a shelter for youth or adults; outside in a park, on the street, under a bridge of overhang, or on a rooftop; or in the subway or other underground public place.
HOMLESPERSYR is part of the Youth Risk Behavior supplement, introduced in 1992. The supplement includes questions about injury risks, physical fights, weapons use, cigarette smoking, chewing tobacco, alcohol and illegal drug use, AIDS/HIV education, diet and nutrition, physical activities, stays away from home, and sexual behaviors.
