Description

HEARTROUBEV identifies persons who were ever told by a doctor they had heart trouble. Please see comparability and universe tabs for complete information on the universe each year.

In 1974, the Field Representative's Manual indicates these this term was self-explanatory. Elsewhere in the 1974 surveys, heart trouble included "angina, coronary, rheumatic, leakage, etc." These terms were not routinely shared with respondents. In 1976, this item denotes heart trouble other than hardening of the arteries, high blood pressure, or heart attack. In 1989, this condition refers specifically to heart trouble other than angina.

 

Unlike other variables in the 1974 survey, the question for HEARTROUBEV
could only be answered by the sample person; a proxy respondent was not acceptable except if the respondent was mentally or physically unable to answer.
