Description

For sample adults in 2007, DITSBEV reports whether the person had ever used the South Beach diet for two weeks or more for health reasons. Those who answered affirmatively were asked whether they had used the South Beach diet in the past 12 months (DITSBYR). In 2007, the question for DITSBYR was also asked for sample children.

DITSBEV is part of a series of variables from the 2002 and 2007 supplements on Complementary and Alternative Medicine. In those years, respondents were asked about their use of special diets and 15 other modalities of alternative medicine, although the South Beach diet was not recognized as a specific type of special diet in 2002. For more information about the Alternative Health Supplements, see ACUYR.

For more information about the full range of variables related to the use of special diets-- including the Atkins, macrobiotic, Ornish, Pritikin, South Beach, vegetarian, and Zone diets--see DITATKINYR. With the exception of the South Beach diet, information about the use of each of the other aforementioned special diets is also available for 2002.
