Description

For sample adults who did not report having been diagnosed by a doctor or other health professional as having diabetes (DIABETICEV), DIAPRECOND indicates whether they were ever diagnosed with a pre-diabetic condition. Interviewers asked, "Have you ever been told by a doctor or other health professional that you had any of the following: prediabetes, impaired fasting glucose, impaired glucose tolerance, borderline diabetes, or high blood sugar?"

The 2007 Field Representative's Manual provided the following definitions for prediabetes, borderline diabetes, and high blood sugar:

Prediabetes describes a state of impaired carbohydrate metabolism that places a person at risk for later developing diabetes. Blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes characterize this condition. The two forms of prediabetes are Impaired Fasting Glucose and Impaired Glucose Tolerance.

Borderline Diabetes is a former term used for type 2 diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance.

High Blood Sugar is an excessive amount of glucose found in the blood, also called hyperglycemia.

Comparability

There are differences in the universe between the 2006, 2007, and 2008-forward samples. Please consult the universe tab for more information on these differences.

Universe

  • 2006: Sample adults age 18+ who (other than during pregnancy) were either never told that they had diabetes or were told that they had borderline diabetes, or for whom it was unknown whether they were ever told they have diabetes.
  • 2007: Sample adults age 18+ who were never told they had diabetes, or were only told they had diabetes during pregnancy, or were told had borderline diabetes, or had an unknown response for whether they were ever told they had diabetes.
  • 2008-2018: Sample adults aged 18+ years who were never told they had diabetes, or who refused or said don't know to having been told they had diabetes or were told they had borderline diabetes.
