Description
For sample children age 3 and over, CVLANGDIF reports if the child had any language learning problems that lasted one week or longer in the past 12 months. Language problems are further defined as problems learning, using, or understanding words or sentences.
According to the Field Representative's Manual, language disorders are "any of a number of problems with verbal communication and the ability to use or understand a symbol system for communication."
This variable is part of a series of variables on child communication disorders that constitutes the sample child Voice, Speech, Swallowing, and Language Supplement. Several variables in this supplement can be used to track the Healthy People 2020 Objectives, under the topic of Hearing and other Sensory and Communication Disorders.
Starting in 2022, this variable was combined with the sample adult version of this variable, VSLLGYR.
For more voice, swallowing, speech, and language communication disorder variables, please see VSLDIAG.
