Description

CRONBRONYR identifies sample adults whom a doctor or other health professional had diagnosed with chronic bronchitis during the past 12 months.

The Field Representative's Manual for 2001 forward defines bronchitis as "an inflammation of the bronchial tubes caused by viral or bacterial infection or by the inhalation of irritating fumes (e.g., tobacco smoke, air pollutants). Symptoms include cough, fever, and chest pains." This definition was not routinely shared with respondents. While acute bronchitis is often caused by a viral or bacterial infection, cigarette smoking is the main cause of chronic bronchitis. According to the MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia, "To be diagnosed with chronic bronchitis, the cough and excessive mucus production must have occurred for 3 months or more in at least 2 consecutive years and not be due to any other disease or condition."

The Field Representative's Manual for 2001 forward further notes that emphysema is associated with "long-standing respiratory ailments such as chronic bronchitis." For 1997 forward, EMPHYSEMEV identifies sample adults who were ever diagnosed with emphysema by a doctor or other health professional. For 2002 and 2007 only, EMPHYSEMYR identifies sample adults who had emphysema during the past 12 months.
