Description

For respondents age 17 who ever smoked at least 50 cigars, but do not currently smoke cigars, this variable indicates the length of time since the respondent smoked 3 or more cigars a day. Respondents could report the number of years or "Under 1 year" or "Never smoked 3 or more per week."

The Field Representative's Manual noted that interviewers should only report the number of whole years since the respondent smoked 3 or more cigars a day, rounding down all part years to the last completed year. If the respondent was not sure of the exact time interval, then the range should was recorded.

A cigar was respondent-defined. Note that in the 1970 survey, a respondent representing the family (a proxy) could answer the question associated with CIGARSINCE
for all other family members over age 17.
