Description
For respondents age 17 who currently smoke cigars, and who now smoke cigars, this variable indicates the number of cigars the respondent smokes cigars a day. Respondents could report a number from 1 to 90 or report "3 to 6 per week" or "less than 3 per week."
The Field Representative's Manual noted that, "If the respondent reported an interval (e.g., "3-5 a day") record this if a more definite answer cannot be obtained." Interviewers were also instructed to probe to obtain a best estimate.
A cigar was respondent-defined. Note that in the 1970 survey, a respondent representing the family (a proxy) could answer the question associated with CIGARSADAY for all other family members over age 17.
