Description
For female sample adults ages 18 and older who have ever used birth control pills, BCPILLAGE1ST reports the age when the respondent first started using birth control pills. Researchers may wish to use this variable with (BCPILAG1FLAG), which reports whether the reported age is a reasonable value or not. Values are flagged as unreasonable (or unreliable) if the respondent reported that she first started taking birth control pills before age 9 or after age 59. Researchers may consider dropping unreasonable observations from analyses.
BCPILLAGE1ST was first introduced in 1987 as part of a supplement on cancer epidemiology. For related variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function or drop-down menus.
