Description

BALSYMPTNO provides a count of the number of balance and dizziness symptoms to which the person reported "Yes." This variable is a count of the Yes responses of the person in the following variables: BALSFAINT, BALSBLURVIS, BALSFLOAT, BALSLIGHT, BALSUNSTEADY, BALSVERTIGO, and BALSOTHER.

This variable was part of the Sample Adult Balance Supplement, sponsored by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.

Comparability

In 2016, the count number of symptoms is top-coded at 7, and in 2012, the count number of symptoms is top-coded at 6. Please see the Universe Tab for information on the universe changes over time; this may affect comparability.

Universe

  • 2008: Sample adults age 18+ who have had symptoms of dizziness or at least one balance problem.
  • 2016: Sample adults 18+ who have ever had a problem with dizziness or balance OR sample adults who have ever reported having a problem of at least one specific dizziness or balance problem in the past 12 months.
