Description
For sample adults who were ever diagnosed by a doctor or other health professional as having "some form of arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, lupus, or fibromyalgia" (ARTHGLUPEV), ARTHRHEUMEV identifies those who were told they had rheumatoid arthritis. Interviewers asked, "Which of these were you told you had?" and listed "Rheumatoid arthritis" as a possible response. Other possible responses included:
- Arthritis (ARTHRITEV)
- Gout (ARTHGOUTEV)
- Lupus (ARTHLUPUSEV)
- Fibromyalgia (ARTHFIBROEV)
- Other joint condition (ARTHOTHEV)
Respondents could report more than one condition, as interviewers were instructed to enter all that applied.
Comparability
ARTHRHEUMEV is only available for 2007.
Apart from the screening variable ARTHGLUPEV introduced in 2002, most of the other variables mentioned above are also only available for 2007. The exception is ARTHRITEV (Ever told had arthritis), which was asked of all sample adults in 2001 and covered all sample children for 1997 forward.
