AFBRANCH reports the branch of the armed forces in which the respondent served most recently. Most veteran respondents served in only one branch of the armed forces, which is specified in AFBRANCH. For those who ever served in more than one branch, AFBRANCH identifies the branch in which the person served most recently.
Current service in the armed forces, branch unspecified, is reported in NOWAF for 1997 forward; whether ever honorably discharged from the armed forces, branch unspecified, is reported in HONDSCG for 1997 forward.
